How to Choose Friends That Will Have Good Influence

It may be easier for some people to make new friends at school or in their immediate community. However, it takes some skills to choose the friends that will bring positive things to you as an individual.

Choosing friends does not mean that you will become less connected to the world. Whoever you choose will forever define you as a person. Therefore, here are some guides in choosing your own friends. This is not a one-size-fits-all guide. But, it will provide you with a glimpse of all possible considerations.

Associate Yourself With People With the Same Passion as Yours

The primary consideration or ‘test’ in making new friends is by asking whether they employ the same passions as yours. Do they have the same passion for music as you do? Do they understand your academic drive? Are they the people with the same drive?

Keep in mind that having a set of friends with the same passion will reverberate all your efforts toward realizing your best self in the near future.

Determine Whether They Will Make You a Better Person

Aside from having the same passions, it is best to know whether your association with them will make you a better person. This might seem a little selfish, but surrounding yourself with people who will only make you worse will prove to be harmful in the long run.

Try knowing first if the shared passion is something that is good for you and for the community. If they can indeed share the same positive abilities and passions, then you are in good company.

Look at Their Past Time

Similarly, you should also try to discern their habits when you are hanging out with them. Do they frequently perform illegal activities? Do they spend their leisure time by doing something productive? Knowing their true self behind their social masks will be an effective way to determine whether they deserve your friendship. There’s this saying that you are the average of the five people you spend most of your time with. If they have bad habits, most likely, you would also develop those habits.

Look at Their Contribution to School and Society

Lastly, choose your friends according to how they benefit the society. Will they teach you to become lazy drunkards? Can they help you to become a productive citizen? Will they hone you spiritually? Their contribution to the society, no matter how small or big, defines them as a person. As such, it will also define you as their company.
